Graduate Student Appreciation Lunch

On Thursday, April 12, 2007, a lunch was held in the lobby of the University of Maryland Physics Building. The event was held to recognize the excellent work of our graduate students.

19th Annual CMPS Spring Academic Festival

The 19th Annual Spring Academic Festival was held, on April 20, 2007, to honor the outstanding faculty, staff, students and alumni of the College of Computer, Mathematical and Physical Sciences.

The 2007 Physics Award Winners included the following people:

Exempt Employee Award - Robert Dahms, Assistant Director
J. Robert Dorfman Prize for Undergraduate Research - Danielle G. Allor, Physics & Mathematics
Outstanding Undergraduate - Meredith Holland Brenner, Physics
Physics Distinguished Alumni Award - Mirjam Cvetic, University of Pennsylvania

Maryland Day

In Memoriam

Professor Jim Kelly passed away Saturday, April 21, 2007, after a long medical battle. He was survived by his wife Melinda, his daughter, Colleen and his three brothers, Dennis, Daniel and Edward.

Kelly joined the department as an experimental nuclear physicists in 1984. He was a member of the American Physical Society and a recipient of the J. Robert Oppenheimer Fellowship.

"He was a terrific colleague and a friend, and we will miss him," said Drew Baden. "His fight to stay alive and keep contributing to science is truly inspirational."

A funeral service was held on April 25, 2007 at the Robert Evans Funeral Home.
