Awards & Honors

University of Maryland physics Professor Sylvester "Jim" Gates was named by President Obama as a member of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST).  He joins a team of 20 of the country's leading scientists and engineers who will advise the President directly to help the administration formulate policy related to science, technology, and innovation.

Kara Hoffman, Assistant Professor, was awarded the National Science Foundation's CAREER Award. Dr. Hoffman’s proposal, entitled “CAREER Towards a GZK Neutrino Detector at the South Pole,” was awarded based on scientific and technical merit. NSF funds research in science and engineering through grants, contracts and cooperative agreements.

James Cahill and Andrew Ward, Physics majors, were elected to Phi Beta Kappa this semester. Membership is limited to high-performing juniors and seniors.

Brad Conrad was awarded the University of Maryland Graduate Student Distinguished Service Award. The award celebrates graduate students who have made outstanding contributions to the University community in the areas of scholarship, leadership, involvement and service.

Jordan Horowitz was awarded the Ann G. Wylie Dissertation Fellowship. This fellowship honors outstanding graduate students in the final stages of writing their dissertation.

Warren Huelsnitz was awarded a Graduate Student Summer Research Fellowship for summer 2009. The fellowship enables doctoral students to devote a summer of focused work to prepare for or complete a benchmark in their program's requirements.

North Orissa University, in India, has awarded Rabindra Mohapatra, Professor, the Doctorate of Science degree (Honoris Causa) for his outstanding contributions in the field of science. The degree will be presented on May 12, 2009 at their annual convocation.

Arthur LaPorta, Assistant Professor, was selected as the 2008-2009 Undergraduate Research Mentor of the Year. Undergraduate research plays an important role in the future careers of our students. This award recognizes the importance of the collaboration between student researcher and faculty mentor.

Patrick O’Shea, Physics Affiliate Professor, has been selected as a 2009-2010 Distinguished Scholar-Teacher.  This program honors members of the College Park faculty who have demonstrated outstanding scholarly achievement along with equally outstanding accomplishments as teachers.  O’Shea is also serving as Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
