Dear Readers,

Welcome to another issue of The Photon! We have much good news this month, but I want to take a moment to highlight one item of which I'm especially proud. Earlier this week, as part of the World Year of Physics, the Department hosted “A Nobel Conversation,” in which Nobel Laureates Leon Lederman and William Phillips shared their views on current topics in physics as well as some personal anecdotes with this year's finalists for the prestigious Intel Science Talent Search. The discussion was moderated by science journalist Frank Stasio, but the format also encouraged students to ask questions of the laureates. Also, Drs. Lederman and Phillips asked questions of their audience, this group of bright young scientists representing the promise of the next generation.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that the event was very successful. The students appeared thrilled to be able to interact with such “superstars” of physics. At the same time, the laureates remarked how impressed they were with these inquisitive young minds that inspire our faith in the next generation of science. I found it wonderful to see an opportunity realized for the accomplished to meet the aspiring and I hope that we continue to foster this kind of mentorship.

So, please indulge me as I take this opportunity to thank everyone who took part in the event: Dr. Lederman, Dr. Phillips, Mr. Stasio, the 40 Intel finalists and the many faculty and staff who worked hard to make the day a success. Thank you all for a wonderful day. I can barely think of a better way to celebrate the World Year of Physics.
