On January 24, 2005 Professor S. James Gates gave a BNL Distinguished Lecture at the Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Lab. The lecture was entitled “Superstirng/M-theory: A Lathe for Physics.”

Homeschooling Science Fair Participants and Judges
MRSEC Homeschooling Science Fair

On Wednesday, February 23rd, the Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC), an interdisciplinary research center housed in the Department of Physics, hosted their fourth annual Homeschooling Science Fair in the Adele Stamp Student Union. Area homeschooled students from ages 6-15 presented posters of their science projects to a team of faculty and staff judges and to their parents. A reception followed the poster viewing, where students were recognized for their projects and MRSEC faculty, staff and graduate students were recognized for mentoring the students on their projects.

On March 15, 2005, as part of the University of Maryland World Year of Physics celebration, the Department of Physics hosted a “Nobel Conversation” between Dr. Leon Lederman, recipient of the 1988 Nobel Prize in Physics and Dr. William Phillips, recipient of the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics. work for National Public Radio, moderated the discussion before an audience of the 40 finalists for the prestigious Intel Science talent Search. These high school students, some of the brightest young minds in the country, had the opportunity to meet and engage in dialogue with two of the world’s top physicists.
