Dear Readers,

Dear Readers,

Welcome to another issue of The Photon! This month, in honor of women's history month, we have a special "women in physics" issue. In addition to all the latest news from the Department of Physics, we have several pieces that highlight successful women in physics, discuss the the low number of women (and minorities) in physics and propose ways to remedy the problem. Our featured alum this month is Dr. Zoa Conner, who was gracious enough to share with us both her career journey and her thoughts regarding the under representation of women in physics. Dr. Goodman, our department chair, talks about the necessity for active recruitment of women and minorities - both to the University of Maryland and to the field of physics in general. And we also hear from Professor Sarah Eno - one of our outstanding women faculty - about her latest research in high energy physics.

We also have good news from our faculty, exciting upcoming events and more. For example, Dr. Gates has received the prestigious honor of this year's USM Board of Regent's Faculty Award for Mentoring. Also, don't forget to save the date for Maryland Day (April 24) - the campus' annual event that welcomes the entire community for a day filled with educational fun for the entire family!

As always, if you have any questions or comments about this issue, please contact me at 301-405-5945 or karrie@physics.umd.edu.

Best regards,

Karrie Sue Hawbaker
