PHYS 171 is the first semester of a three-semester calculus-based introductory physics course on classical physics for physics majors and those desiring a rigorous preparation in the physical sciences. The course material covers kinematics, Newton's laws, energy and work, linear and angular momenta, temperature and pressure, ideal gas law, and special relativity. Pre- or co-requisite is MATH 141, as well as a high-school physics course or permission of the department. A reasonable mastery of calculus will be assumed and used regularly in this class.
