Reading Assignments

Physics 131, Fall 2011

Prof. E. F. Redish

There is a reading assignment to be done before each lecture.

This assignment consists of a few web pages. For three of these pages, you will be required to enter some comments in the MasteringPhysics environment specifying

    1. A brief summary of the main points of the page. (Try to keep it short, but focus on the key points you think you will need to know.)
    2. A description of anything on the page you found confusing or unclear.
    3. A question or two that you have that you would like answered that would help you understand the material better.

This kind of activity is called JiTT (Just-in-Time-Teaching). Your lecturer will read your comments before the next morning's lecture. This will provide you feedback to help you make sense of the materials that we will be using in class to solve problems together.

Your JiTT comments are due the night before each lecture at 9 PM and will not be accepted after that. Each of the 3 commentaries will receive a homework point (if something reasonable is written).

Click on the following links to find the readings for each lecture. (Rows will be added as the semester progresses. Links are likely to NOT be posted until after the previous lecture.)

NOTE: Each page has lots of cross links -- some back to other pages in the assignment (just like in Wikipedia). We recommend that you begin by reading each of the pages through first without following the imbedded links. After you have read the relevant pages (and written your notes about the three green-marked pages) feel free to go back and explore, getting as lost in cyberspace as you usually do when you surf the web! (But also note that some of the linked pages haven't been written yet!)
