Author: Abhijit Majumder, The Ohio State University Title: Hard jets as probes of dense soft matter and a possible new effective theory Abstract: We will focus on the use of hard jet modification as universal probes of the properties of the dense soft QCD matter in large nuclei as well as the hot matter created in a heavy-ion collision. After a review of the theory including the approximation schemes used and the basic phenomenology involved, we will discuss some of the successes and failures of this program as applied at RHIC and HERA. Time permitting, we will discuss some of the new observables that may be accessed at the LHC (as well as a future EIC) and outstanding theoretical issues including the construction of a new effective field theory of hard jets in soft dense matter.
