Website Redesign Guidelines

We are looking to have the SPS website redesigned. Anyone who wants to try their hand may submit a new design for this site, and the best will be used for the new site. The winner will receive a $50 prize.

Entries in this contest must observe the following guidelines:

- Contents: The new site must contain at least the content of the current one, including a roster of members, calendar of events, minutes, doughnut chart, links, pictures and news. You may organize this content differently from how the current site does, but all of it must be here. When submitting your site, you may fill the news, roster, etc. with placeholder gibberish if you want.
- Tech: You may not use any server-side scripts that must run on our server. We aren't allowed to use them. This includes, for example, anything using CGI. Javascript is fine, since it runs on the client's machine, not on our server. Do not do the site in Flash, even though it runs client-side. Not everyone has Flash and, more imortantly, I won't be able to edit it.
- Usability: Make sure the browser's back and forward buttons work as they should within your site.
- Compatibility: The site should be viewable in at least Internet Explorer and Firefox. Preferably in Safari, Netscape, and Opera too. Also, the site should not require resolutions higher than 1024x768 to be usable.

Entries must be received by October 12. To submit an entry, zip all of the files with your favrite compression program and send to chawkin2@wam.umd.edu. I can read most of the usual formats (.zip, .gz, .bz2, .sit, and .rar are all fine). The subject line should contain the string "sps-website". Include your full name in the email, with your zipped site as an attachment. If the file is too large to email easily, you may also provide me with a link to somewhere on the web where your zipfile is located. One place you may want to host it is your WAM account. If ssh into wam.umd.edu, you can put a page at /users/username/pub. It will be accessible at http://www.wam.umd.edu/~username. In both cases, replace username with your directory ID.
If you have any further questions, just send me an email at the above address and I'll try to answer your question(s).
If we must disqualify your entry, I'll try to email you back and let you know why. I make no promises on that, however, especially if I get a large number of entries.
