Fall 2005

September 26, 2005 (Charles Hawkins)

I've put up the minutes from the meeting on the 22nd. As usual, they're poorly organized and lack the narrative quality of the prose produced by previous holders of my office. I suspect that the narratives were wirtten after the fact using notes taken at the time of the events described, but I've just been dumping the notes up here. Perhaps I will at some point resume the old tradition.

At the last meeting, I found that Bernie, the Vice President, has the sheet with the names and emails on it. He's promised to get it to me as soon as he can, and I will update the roster as soon as I have it.

On the subject of the roster, I realize that some people may not wish their email addresses to be posted on the web. If you put yours on the sheet, but don't want it to show up on our roster, please email me at chawkin2@wam.umd.edu, stating your name and that you don't want your address to be on the site. Your name will still appear, but I won't put up your email.

Quick note. If you use the lounge vending machine, please use US quarters only. The other day, someone put a British coin in one of the slots. It was almost the same dimensions as a US quarter, and jammed the machine. It took some effort to fix it, so please be careful in the future, especially if you're carrying foreign coins, tokens, or anything else that might be easily confused with US currency. This machine was not designed with Murphy's Law in mind.

Ok, today I've put the minutes up for the last two meetings (the first was an officers' meeting). Also, a brief calendar for September and October is up. It doesn't yet have details on the events, or even the time for some of them. More details as I get them.

The big news today is the news itself. Or rather, the news section of the site. In addition to the brief news in the side-bar, I'll be providing more detailed news about the site and SPS here. I know the gray doesn't really fit with the rest of the site. I may do something about that if I should stumble accross a design that fits with the rest and isn't horribly ugly (like most of the rest of the site is...). The news section doesn't yet have a link in the sidebar like the other sections. When I have time, I'll try to create one which replicates the appearance of the other links on the bar. Until then, there will be just the link in the news section of the sidebar and with the navigation links at the bottom of each page. I'll probably be redoing the whole site design anyway, at some ill-defined point in the future. I don't know when this will be or what the site will look like, but I'd like to do it eventually.

In other news, the paper with names and emails mentioned in the previous news update still hasn't surfaced. We may have to pass around another paper at the next meeting, this Thursday at 5 pm. I'll make sure we don't lose it this time.

Note: I actually wrote this on the 20th, expanding on the brief news I had put up on the 13th.

Charles Hawkins here, the new SPS secretary. I've finally been successful in accessing the website, so I can update it. Seems they changed servers and nobody in SPS heard about it. Now that I'm connecting to the right server, I'll be making updates to the site as I can. Today, I've updated the officers section of the roster, updated the donut chart, and have put up a new logo on the main page.

Concerning the roster, I am waiting for the paper the new members wrote their names and email addresses on. I'm not sure who has it, but as soon as I get hold of it, I'll update the members section.

The donut chart for this semester is up, but it's not yet full. We've started selling donuts, but there are still empty slots. The 8:00 - 9:00 shifts on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday are empty, so we need people for these.

Lastly, I've put up a new logo on the main page, a product of what little skill I have with the GIMP. I may or may not fiddle with it some more later.
