MinutesSPS meeting on January 29,2004 Called to order at 5:37pm Donuts We would like to be able to start next week but that is unlikely. Mark VanBuskirk is now Donut Czar and will have more information shortly. There is a Sign up Sheet on the back of the lounge door. Everyone is encouraged to sign up for a shift if at all possible so that we don’t have to hunt people down. We are still selling donuts and are still allowed to sell our own coffee. Our deal with the department and Dining Services is that we will sell membership cards, good for the semester, for a discount of $0.25 on coffee at Starbucks and on beverages at our stand. The economics of card prices were debated and it was settled on pricing the student membership cards at $10 and non-student membership cards at $15 for the time being. Website The meeting minutes from last semester are now up on the SPS website. A weekly agenda will now be posted on the site for the upcoming meeting so that you can know ahead of time what will be going on. Website permissions will be expanded to all officers for purposes of updating the site. E-mail Kim or listserv if you have an agenda item that is not on the agenda but that you believe needs to be addressed. Do not talk to Kim about it as the item will go in one ear and out the other. Send an e-mail and your item will be added. Basketball Concessions We have been given the opportunity to man a concessions stand at five home basketball games. As an incentive to do this, we are given ten percent of the amount that we sell. However, 16 to 20 people are needed for each game. One option to provide the total number of people is to contract out with other groups who also would not be able to do concessions on their own. The good thing about doing that is we don't have to split money down the middle since it is our booth. Volunteer Opportunity The National Air & Space Museum is looking for people to volunteer for 2 hours a week at the museum. There are fringe benefits such as IMAX and Planetarium tickets, as well as the possibility for recommendations. See Mia for more information. Colloquia There are colloquia each Tuesdays at 5pm in the Physics building. The next on is on carbon nanotubes and quantum computing. Snack food will be provided. Talks Our first SPS talk of the semester will be on February 5th, 2004 at 5pm. The talk will be given by guests from George Washington University. The topic will be Climate Dynamics. While a definite room has not been set, the talk will more than likely be given in Room 1201 in the Physics Building. Movie night We are looking to start having movie nights again soon. Some suggestions given for movies were Pirates of the Caribbean and Indiana Jones. However, we need a few weeks to raise funds to buy pizza for this event. Adam suggested that we buy the Papa John's coupon books that are normally given for fundraisers and use them to save on pizza for movie nights. Miscellaneous Items New couch from Dr. Green will be moved into the lounge. Help will be needed. Trying to coordinate liasion with geology club, which is the opposite of SPS gender-wise. Bernie is not allowed near any experiments, especially whips. Ben has put up tutoring forms around the building for people to take. He is a good tutor for anyone looking for someone. Dr. Redish is looking for a student employee. Flyer is posted in lounge window. Bernie thinks everyone looks like Mark B. Alex is a singularity, neither male nor female according to Kim. We are waiting to figure out the status of an old arcade game that Dan is donating. Currently, parts are being sought out to fix the machine. A card access sheet for the lounge was made available and passed around at the meeting Back to the list of minutes. Main | Roster | Calendar | Minutes | Pictures | Doughnuts | Links | News |
