MinutesMarch 6, 2003 The Faculty-Student Luncheon is Friday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.! Undergraduates, faculty, and SPS members of all kinds are invited to come. This is a chance to meet professors in the department in a relaxed environment, and talk about research if you're interested. If you can help set up, clean up, or pick up food, e-mail me at rott@wam.umd.edu (yes, it's short notice, but what do you expect?). For some reason, the fact that Cavan and Keavin don't like Gammon for 405 was discussed at some length. Physics is Phun starts tomorrow (Thursday the 12th) and runs until Saturday. If you can help out, let Bernie in the Student Services office (across from the chair's office) know. The benefits are: 1. You get to see the show, which is about sound and music 2. Free pizza, drinks and a lovely teal Physics is Phun T-shirt 3. You get to hassle Ryan later about his inability to come Maryland Day is approaching. It's Saturday, April 26th. Reka is looking for people to help run things (like demos, making balloons, liquid N2 ice cream, cooking hot dogs, etc.). She has a list of events and a sign up sheet at http://www.physics.umd.edu/marylandday The Physics Olympics is March 29th. This is a competition for high school students interested in physics. I've been told that the students have a lot of fun. The department needs our help running it - they need judges for the events (which is fun) and they *really* want us to sell donuts, juice and coffee/tea for the event. This is a Saturday, from 8 a.m. to noon. It's also the tail end of spring break. If you can make it to help out, please e-mail Mark at binfield@wam.umd.edu. We really need the help. And it's a really good deal for us - the SPS makes a lot of money and the department is very happy. If you missed it, Hassam didn't give his talk. Some form of miscommunication. So he's going to reschedule, I'd imagine. Monica and Kristin have been enlisted to talk to him. The rock climbing trip was discussed. There is going to be a sign up sheet for those interested posted on the lounge door at some point. It will be on a Saturday at 9 a.m., most likely the 3rd of May. Those interested should find each other and discuss said trip. As for the camping trip - the Astroterps didn't seem to like the idea of being alone in the wilderness with us. I can't imagine why. So Kristin is working on organizing an SPS camping trip somewhere, that will likely occur in late May. E-mail her or the listserv if you're interested. Ryan has suggested videotaping the Tuesday symposiums and potentially setting up a video library. He's in charge of it, but Dominic has offered aid in videotaping. Keavin - you will be beaten if you don't sign the bank account over soon. I have talked to Cavan, and we have a gang of thugs just waiting for the word. Last, and certainly not least, we had demos for the first time in a while. Back to the list of minutes. Main | Roster | Calendar | Minutes | Pictures | Doughnuts | Links | News |
