30 January 2003 Minutes for Society of Physics Students, University of 
Maryland Chapter

The meeting was called to order at some point by Mark, in his first 
official act as chair -- I mean President.

We discussed holding some kind of joint activity with PME (the math 
student organization) and/or Astroterps.  The favorite ideas were a 
movie night or a party of some kind.

The doughnut time sheet was passed around, and most of the slots were 
filled.  However, we still have some empty time-periods, so if you can 
help out with them, please tell Bernie.  (The doughnut schedule should 
be emailed out shortly (hint hint).)  We would like to start doughnuts 
the week of 10 February.

Rich offered to run a CSR tour for us, since he can get into most of 
the interesting spaces down there.  The suggestion was made that we 
could invite PME and/or Astroterps on the spelunk-erific adventure.

We haven't toured the nuclear reactor in recent history, so the motion 
was made that we could do that again.  [Since the prospect of any of 
us reproducing is rather scary, I whole-heartedly endorse this trip.]

We want to do as many talks as we can this semester.  The speakers we 
considered, along with the people assigned to talk to them, are:
	Prof. Jacobson (after the CMB data) - Lucy
	Prof. Cohen - Lucy
	Prof. Miller (astronomy) - Mia
	quantum computing - Rich
	Prof. Luty
	Prof. Losert has been put on the table for a Fall 2003 talk

We had a pretty good turn out at five o'clock, and those in attendance 
agreed that this was the best time for them.  However, some people who 
would have liked to attend could not.  If you can't attend at five, 
but would come to meetings at another time, please email either the 
list or Mark with what times would work for you.

NASM volunteering [Make of this what you will.  There are a lot of 
funny phrases that acronymize to NASM, so have fun!]

The deadline for the Goddard internship has been extended.  But Ryan 
has threatened with physical harm all those who hurt his chances for it.

Tom Gleason has an undergraduate social scheduled for this coming 
Thursday at 5:00, either in the Toll Lounge or the lobby.  This will 
preempt our regularly scheduled meeting, but we will still try to 
gather there to discuss the talks briefly.

Keavin, get the back account transferred NOW!  (Or we release the 
Keavin-seeking missiles.)
