Note to the instructor: The issue here definitely includes a serious dose of "representation translation." Some students interpret the graph of electric field along a line as extending into space. If the "E-field vector can't fit through the slit" its intensity will be reduced. This isn't so crazy when analyzed in terms of p-prims. A smaller slit does produce a smaller intensity. "Not fitting through" is a plausible interpretation.
