Curriculum development to address student difficulties
McDermott-style tutorial uses video created at Dickinson College of a candle moving due to a sound wave to help students visualize effects of sound wave and develop their understanding of graphing and mathematics.
Active learning:
- Students must verbalize their models.
- Predictions are compared to video.
- Students use video to describe the motion of the medium due to the wave both graphically and mathematically.
- By imagining multiple candles, they develop the idea of wavelength and period.
