Summary of Alex’s interpretation:
A sound wave is a succession of pulses, each exerting a force in only one direction on the dust particle, pushing it away from the speaker. (4 of 6 students gave similar explanations)Similar reasoning was used to explain the motion of the candle flame (that it is blown over by the sound wave).
We refer to this as the Particle Pulses model of sound.
