The condensed matter theory group applies quantum theory and statistical mechanics to the study of macroscopic physical systems. Dramatic technological advcances have resulted from such study and the corresponding experimental work. Partially because of its practical ramifications, condensed matter physics has become the largest subdivision of physics.
