Competing Orders in the Cuprate Superconductors

Eugene Demler

(Harvard University)

Abstract:  The interplay of superconductivity, spin and charge density wave orders in the high temperature cuprate superconductors will be discussed. It will be demonstrated that experiments in the vortex state of such materials provide an important insight into the nature of the doped Mott insulators. A new approach to testing the microscopic models of superconductivity in the cuprates using cold fermionic atoms in optical lattices will be presented.
