Quantum Accelerator Modes in Atom Optics

Shmuel Fishman

(Technion, Israel)

Abstract:  Recently unexpected accelerator modes were observed experimentally for driven cold cesium atoms. A theoretical explanation of this quantum effect will be presented. The theory makes use of symmetries of the system (that are similar to symmetries of solids) and of a limit that is very similar to the semiclassical limit, but with a small parameter that is NOT Planck's constant. The talk in based on work in progress in collaboration with Italo Guarneri and Laura Rebuzzini from Como (Italy)
