MM are the mental patterns (images, maps, rules, analogies, or associations) that organize and simplify a set of knowledge and guide spontaneous reasoning.
Problematic elements of student mental models:
Possibly incomplete, self-contradictory, and/or inconsistent with the world around us (but other mental models take care of that).
