There
wasn't anything better about attending UMD than taking
physics courses! By far and away the best courses though
were upper-level lab courses - PHYS 375 and 429. Since
graduating, I've kept up a bit on the PHYS429 course and
am sorry to see that many of the experiments that I and
others worked on have been cancelled due to lack of funding
for replacement equipment. I was probably one of the last
people to get the Optical Pumping and the Hanle Effect
apparatus to work, and it's too bad that others can't
learn from these experiments as I did. Charles Smarsh
and Dr. Roos were extremely helpful to me during that
time and I appreciate your hard work gentlemen! I also
enjoyed working with Colin Shreffler, Vishnu Jejjala,
and Ming Wong (among many others!) on those experiments.
I'm currently working as a software engineer developing
wireless software for field service management, and the
background I have in physics from UMD is valuable in understanding
the theory of RF communication. This gives me a much better
perspective and knowledge of the field than other application
developers who focus strictly on software development.
In addition to this I develop financial software which
makes use of linear programming, also a part of the physics
curriculum (through the math department). I'd be interested
in communicating with people I used to study or work with
at UMD, so please feel free to drop me an email. Thanks!
