MRSEC/ NASA Science Workshop for High School Students

The Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) hosted a NASA-funded science workshop for high school students. The wrokshop used hands-on instruction to teach students about roller coasters and featured talks on related topics (G-forces and the body and new lightweight materials are two example) by NASA scientists.

Understanding Understanding: A Celebratory Session

In celebration of his 60th birthday, Professor Edward Redish was honored at a session of the American Association of Physics Teachers entitled "Understanding Understanding: A Celebratory Session." The session consisted fo three talks and a birthday cake.

The talks were:
- Questioning the Questions: Playing with Constraints in Physics Education Research
- Making Meaning: Emergent Cognition in Physics and Physics Education Research
- Theoretical Frames and Overlapping Communities: A Linguist and a Physicist Evolving Together

MRSEC Science Fair for Homeschool Students

The MRSEC (Materials Research Science & Engineering Center) hosted a science fair for area homeschool children. The studented ranged in age from kindergarten to 9th grade. UM faculty judges awarded prizes in several age groups and participation certificates for everyone.

Special Discussion: Status of Women in Science

On November 19, 2002 at 10:30 am, UM Physics hosted a special discussion on the status of women in science, led by Professor Meg Urry from Yale University.

Professor Urry is director of the Yale Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics. Last spring, Professor Urry led the US delegation of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics' (IUPAP) International Conference on Pure and Applied Physics.

Women Pioneering the Future

On March 19, 2002, Professor Ellen WIlliams participated in "Women PIoneering the Future," hosted by the Goddard Women's Advisory Committee. Dr. Williams was one of four accomplished women scientist that have made a difference in government, industry and/or academia.
