· Joe Katsouros, a graduate student working under Alan DeSilva, passed away this January. Joe was a talented physicists and a pleasure to be in his company. The Department held a memorial service for Joe on Monday, February 3, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. in the West Chapel. Joe had many friends among the students, faculty and staff here at UM Physics and the Department sends its sincerest condolences to Joe's many loved ones.

 
· On Monday January 13, 2003 Mitch Slawsky, an invaluable member of our Department for many years, passed away. Mitch and his brother Zackstarted the Slawsky tutoring clinic in our department 1975. This clinic has helped tens of thousands of students in our service courses learn the techniques of solving physics problems and reduce their fear of physics. The Department is very thankful for Mitch's work initiating this program and extends its sincerest condolences to his friends and family.
 
On December 25, 2002, Mark Vilas, a member of our machne shop for many years,after a long and difficult struggle with numerous serious illnesses. Mark was a valued member of our Department for over thirteen years. He created the "Vilas Tortuga Award" which was awarded each year by the shop to show appreciation for the support offered to them by an individual or group. Mark will be remembered for his good nature, virtuoso skills, and tremendous kindness to all who knew him. The Department held a memorial service for Mark Vilas in the West Chapel on Friday, March 14, 2003 at 2:00 p.m.The Department is very grateful for his many years of service and sends its sincerest sympathy to his family.
