Richard A. Ferrell The Department of Physics would like to express its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Richard A. Ferrell. Dr. Ferrell passed away, in his home, on November 14, 2005.
He was the beloved husband of Miriam L. Ferrell and father of Rebecca Wright and Robert Ferrell. Dr. Ferrell had been in the department since 1953, and was a founding member and leader of the Condensed Matter Theory research group. He was a distinguished scientist and an integral member of our department. He will be missed. A memorial service was held for Dr. Ferrell on Friday, December 2, at The University of Maryland Memorial Chapel. Several family, friends and colleagues were in attendance to remember his life and career. Those who wish to make contributions, on behalf of Dr. Ferrell, may donate to the Fund for the Encouragement of International Exchange in Physics, to the University of Maryland in memory of Dr. Richard Ferrell, c/o UMD Physics Department Chair's office- College Park, MD 20742. |
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lingyun Shi We all join in expressing our sincerest condolences and support to Dr. Lingyun Shi's family and friends during a very difficult time. Dr. Lingyun Shi passed away on December 2, 2005 at the John Hopkins Memorial Hospital. Dr. Shi was a Research Associate in Dennis Drew's Condensed Matter Research Group. He obtained his bachelor's degree at Nanjing University and his PhD at Arizona State University . The Chinese Student and Scholar Association has established a memorial fund to assist Dr. Shi's parents with their travel expenses (from China ) and final arrangements for Lingyun. Individuals wishing to contribute should make checks payable to “CSSA” noted “Shi Memorial Fund.” Donations will be collected by Margaret Lukomoska or Lorraine DeSalvo in rooms 2323 and 1109. We all join in expressing our sincerest condolences and support to Dr. Lingyun Shi's family and friends during this very difficult time.
