· Professor Edward Redish has been selected as a 2006-2007 Distinguished Scholar-Teacher. The program honors members of our faculty who have demonstrated outstanding scholarly achievements along with equally outstanding accomplishments as teachers. Each year, a panel of former Distinguished Scholar-Teachers, review nominations and choose several faculty members for this honor. Congratulations!

· Professor Bei Lok Hu was awarded the 2006-2007 GRB Research Grant.

· Sylvester James Gates Jr. was awarded a 3-year $500.000 (AUS Dollars) Discovery Grant from the Australian Research Council. The grant will support joint research exchanges between personnel in the UMCP physics department and the corresponding ``physics school'' at the University of Western Australia . Congratulations!

 


 

· William D. Dorland and Daniel Lathrop have been elected Fellows of the American Physical Society . Election to Fellowship in the APS is limited to no more than one-half of one percent of the membership. This Fellowship is recognition, from their peers, for their outstanding contributions to physics. Congratulations!

goodman, ferrell & fuhrer

· Michael S. Fuhrer was awarded the 2005 Ferrell Award. This award recognizes the outstanding research, teaching and service accomplishments of an exceptional faculty member at an early part of his/her career. Dr. Fuhrer is an associate professor for the Department of Physics and the Center for Superconductivity and Research. Congratulations!


· Keith Schwab was awarded a Young Scholars Prize at the “Amazing Light” symposium in celebration of the inventor of the laser and Nobel Laureate Charles Townes. Twenty Noble prize winners were in attendance for the three day symposium held at UC Berkley. Schwab was awarded the prize as a result of the world-class experiments accomplished with his nanomechanics group. Congratulations!

· Alexey Toptygin, Jian-Zhong Wang and Yunju Han were awarded The National Science Foundation's Antarctica Service Medal of the United States of America, for ATIC (a baloon experiment in Anatactica) in 2000. The three were students of Dr. Eun-Suk Seo.
