· The College Park chapter of the Association for India's Development (AID), led by Professor Satindar (Sam) Bhagat, has energized the Maryland community to raise nearly $3 million to help the victims of the Tsunami disaster. Alumnus Ravi Kuchimanchi led the fundraising effort. The Department of Physics is very proud of the many members of the physics family for their part in such an extraordinary response to this tragedy.

Professor Thomas Cohen
· Congratulations to Professor Thomas Cohen. He has been chosen as one of the University's four Distinguished Scholar-Teachers for 2005. This award recognizes the University faculty who are both excellent scholars in their fields and superior teachers. Dr. Cohen has a long-standing reputation for his approachable nature and excellent teaching ability. The Department is extremely pleased to see him formally recognized for his efforts. As part of the Distinguished Scholar-Teacher program, Dr. Cohen will be giving a lecture in the Fall 2005 semester. The date is to be announced.
 
· Congratulations to Jessica Li. Jessica is a high school student who studied string theory under Professor S. James Gates this past summer through his annual Summer Student Theoretical Physics Session. Jessica has been admitted to the California Institute of Technology early action. While most of her classmates in this program were college students, Jessica excelled in the course and was able to put together a very fine research report. The Department of Physics is also very proud of Dr. Gates for this fine example of his great contributions as a mentor to young up-and-coming scientists. Congratulations to you both!
 
Professor Ellen Williams
· Congratulations to Professor Ellen Williams! She has been appointed to the American Physical Society's Physics Policy Committee, the advisory committee to the APS' governmental and lobbying activities. Dr. Williams' term began January 1, 2005 and will extend until December 31, 2007.
