Prof. J. Robert Anderson

· Congratulations to Professor J. Robert Anderson ! He has earned an International Service Award, an honor that recognizes significant contributions to the development of international programs here at the University of Maryland . Specifically, Dr. Anderson was awarded for his collaborations with colleagues in the United States and abroad, working to expand knowledge of condensed matter physics around the world.

· Professor William Dorland has been elected to the American Physical Society's Panel on Public Affairs, Professor Sarah Eno has been elected to the executive committee of the APS' Division of Particles and Fields and Professor Edward Redish has been elected to chair the APS' Committee on Education. Congratulations to all three faculty for earning such notable leadership positions in the field!

Prof. Elizabeth Beise, Ms. Kristin Kiriluk, Mr. James Klemstine and
Dean Stephen Halperin (CMPS)

· Ms. Kristin Kiriluk , one of our outstanding undergraduate students, is one of 25 seniors from the entire University awarded this year's Philip Merrill Presidential ScholarAward. This award recognizes successful undergraduate seniors and the designated faculty mentor and K-12 teacher that guided each of them along their career path. Ms. Kiriluk named Dr. Elizabeth Beise , professor of physics, as her faculty mentor and Mr. James Klemstine, her 7 th grade science teacher, as her K-12 teacher. Congratulations to Kristin for her great undergraduate achievement and to both Dr. Beise and Mr. Klemstine for their excellent mentorship. For more information, please click here.

Prof. Andrew Baden
Prof. Theodore Jacobson
Prof. Hassan Jawahery
Prof. Ho Jung Paik
Prof. Victor Yakovenko

· Congratulations to Physics at Maryland 's five newest APS Fellows! Professors Andrew Baden, Theodore Jacobson , Hassan Jawahery , Ho Jung Paik , and Victor Yakovenko have all been elected fellows of the American Physical Society. APS Fellowship is reserved for the top one half of one percent of the membership.

Dr. Andrew Baden was elected “For exceptional work in hadron collider physics, including instrumentations and ideas that contributed to the top quark discovery.”

Dr. Jacobson
was recognized “For pioneering work on spin-connection formulations of gravitational dynamics, black hole thermodynamics, and the possible role of the microstructure of spacetime in black hole physics and high energy particle physics.”

Dr. Hassan Jawahery
was honored “For important contributions to the measurement of bottom quark properties and the CKM matrix elements, including the CP violating phase.”

Dr. Paik
was elected “For outstanding contributions to the measurement of gravitational phenomena, including gravitational wave detection, tests of the inverse square law, and gravity gradiometry.”

Dr. Yakovenko
was honored “For important contributions to the theory of low-dimensional organic conductors and other correlated electronic materials.”

Many congratulations to this outstanding group of physicists for their well-deserved recognition of their contributions to the field of physics.

Master Luke Montfort
·  Congratulations to Ms. Reka Montfort (chair's office) and her husband Josh! They welcomed their first child into the world on Friday, October 29, 2004. Luke Dharshan Montfort weighed in 6lb 9oz and measured 19in long. Mom and baby are both doing well.

· Mr. Casey Retterer , one of our current undergraduate students earned an impressive $14,000 finish on College Jeopardy this November. Congratulations Casey! We hope you had a great time participating on the show.
