Summer 2004

RISE Program

Dr. Melanie Becker

In the Summer of 2004, Professor Melanie Becker provided undergraduate women with valuable research experience through the Research Internship in Science and Engineering (RISE) program. These four women students, chosen from more than 100 applicants, spent up to five hours a day in classes and several more hours on independent work, learning about string theory. Research has shown that the number of women in physics drastically drops-off after their undergraduate work. This program, funded by the National Science Foundation, works to encourage undergraduate female physics majors to get involved in research and continue their physics educations, reducing the severity of that drop-off.
