This
month:
... Atomic physics, the study
of the properties of atoms and how they interact, has undergone its ups
and downs. Careful measurement of atomic spectra was the impetus for the
development of quantum mechanics in the early part of the 20th century.
By the 1950's the field was rather mature, and it seemed that exciting discoveries
would mostly be occurring elsewhere in physics. All that changed with the
invention of the laser in the 1960s, which rejuvenated atomic physics. .... <<Full text>> |
