Outreach Program Success

Each summer, Dr. S. James Gates, the John S. Toll Professor of Physics here at the University of Maryland, hosts educational outreach programs, one of which is the five-year-old Summer Student Theoretical Physics Session. In this program, undergraduate students from campuses around the country come to UM Physics to examine a variety of theoretical physics concepts, including quantum gravity, string theory and M-Theory. This year, one of those students was awarded the Black Engineer of the Year Conference's Student Leadership Award. Emmanual A. Cephas Jr., currently a Frostberg State University senior, received this honor partly because of the research he did with Dr. Gates here at Maryland last summer.

The Department wishes Mr. Cephas many congratulations and thanks Dr. Gates for a job well done as a mentor. Mr. Cephas' success is just one example of how educatiional outreach programs can positively affect the lives and careers of young scientists.
