From the Physics Chair
Prof. Jordan A. Goodman, Chair, Physics Department

By Jordan A. Goodman,
Physics Chair

Dear Readers,

As many of you already know, Maryland Physics is stronger than ever! As we build on past successes and work toward new discoveries, our innovative research, award-winning faculty and rigorous academic programs are making headlines. However, to maintain this momentum in an era of diminishing State support, we need help from friends like you.

Several initiatives, which are integral parts of the Department's success, depend upon your support. For example, the Physical Sciences Complex, currently in the planning phase, will be a state-of-the-art facility to house Maryland's groundbreaking research and education in physical science. This new building will replace our existing antiquated building with preeminent laboratories, auditoria, offices and classrooms equipped with the latest technologies and infrastructure, allowing Maryland Physics to attract top faculty and students and strengthen collaborations with government, industry and peer academic institutions. It will provide a home for the entire Physics Department, plus Astronomy and IPST. This new building provides the opportunities to make the University of Maryland a hub for scientific discovery and collaboration. To achieve this goal, we need the help of alumni and friends like you.

We also depend upon your support for the Physics Scholarship and Award Fund, one of our key student recruitment and retention activities. This fund allows us to give new laptop computers to our top incoming physics majors - most of whom were offered impressive University scholarships such as the Banneker/Key - as an extra incentive to study here at Maryland. This unique program has been very effective in helping us recruit some of the brightest young scientists in the nation.

Please click here for more information about both of these programs as well as a list of other initiatives that could benefit from your contribution. All donations are tax deductible.

With your help, we can continue to move the Department forward, further improving our groundbreaking research and renowned academic program. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me with any questions (goodman@umdgrb.umd.edu or 301-405-5946).

Sincerely,

[ Goodman's Sig ]

Jordan A. Goodman
Professor and Chair
