African Institute of Mathematical Sciences

Professor S. James Gates was one of four inaugural plenary speakers for the opening of the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) on the topic "The Third Eye of Science." AIMS is a new educational centre in Cape Town, South Africa that is working to promote mathematics and science in Africa, recruit and train talented students and teachers and build capacity for African initiatives in education, research, and technology.

ACE/RHESSI/WIND Workshop

Professor Glenn Mason gave a talk at the ACE/RHESSI/WIND Workshop in Taos, New Mexico entitled "Solar eneretic particle acceleration and propagation: recent progress from ACE." At the same workshop, research scientist Dr. Mihir Desai spoke on "Contribution of flare particles to the suprathermal ion population through the solar cycle."

Invited Talks by Professor Paik

On October 8, 2003, Professor Ho Jung Paik gave an invited talk entitled "Probing Extra Dimensions With a Superconducting Differential Accelerometer" at the 6th International Conference on Gravitation and Astrophysics held in Seoul Korea. During the same trip, he gave colloquia with the same title at Seoul National University and Korea Basic Science Institute.

Alumni Reunion

The College of Computer Mathematial & Physical Sciences (CMPS) hosted its first annual alumni reunion. More than 250 faculty, alumni and families visited the University of Maryland for a fun-filled day of visiting old friends and teachers!

Staff Appreciation Luncheon

The Department of Physics thanked its hard-working staff at the fall Staff Appreciation Luncheon. Donna Hammer, Assistant Director of the Materials Research Science & Engineering Center, was awarded the Sibylle Sampson Award and Mary Ridgell, Executive Administrative Assistant for Drs. Toll and Langenberg, received the Chair's Award.

Loretta Robinette and Charles Smarsh were honored for 30 years of service to the Department, Linda O'Harra and Mary Ridgell were honored for 20 years, Jesse Anderson, Doug Fong and Scott Lasley were honored for 15 years and Donna Hammer was honored for 5 years of service.

The Vilas Tortuga Award was presented to Dr. James Duncan (mechanical engineering) in recognition of outstanding support of the Mechanical Development Group.

MRSEC Welcomes African Scientists

The Materials Reserach Science & Engineering Center (MRSEC) hosted materials scientists from several African scientific research institutions. The visitors toured the MRSEC's labs as well as the National Institute of Standards & Technology and the American Center for Physics.

Remembering Kurt Tassche

One Year after the fire in the Physics Building and the resulting tragic death of university electrician Kurt Tassche, the Department welcomed Kurt's loved ones and colleagues for the dedication of a plaque in Kurt's name. The entire Department is thankful for his dedication to his job and to his craft. He is, of course, sincerely missed. Anyone wishing to honor Kurt through a donation may contribute to The Kurt Tassche
"Electric 99" Fund, which supports students interested in following in his footsteps. The fund is managed by Prince George's Community College. Please call 301-322-0858.

 

 

Invited Talks on Neutrinos

Professor Rabindra Mohapatra gave several talks on neutrino mass physics over the last few months. He delivered plenary talks at two major international conferences: SUSY 2003 in Tucson, Arizona in June 2003 and TAUP 2003 in Seattle, Washington in September 2003.

He also gave several other invited talks talks in international conferences: WIN '03 in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin; CIPANP 2003 in New York and a Neutrino telescope workshop in Venice, Italy.
