K4-08: MAGNETOELECTRIC GENERATOR WITH INDUCTOR

PURPOSE: To demonstrate how a magnetoelectric generator stores energy in an inductor and how that energy is returned to the generator.

DESCRIPTION: A Genecon is used to store energy in an inductor. While the handle is being cranked, it is stopped and immediately released. What will the handle do: (a) continue to move in the same direction, (b) reverse, and move in the opposite direction, or (c) immediately stop and not move at all. Click your mouse on the photograph above to see an mpeg video of the result: the generator handle will reverse direction and move in the opposite direction.

SUGGESTIONS: See Question of the Week #80 for information on using this demonstration to enhance class involvement.
