PURPOSE: Conundrum involving angular motion.
DESCRIPTION: The problem is to get the olive into the wineglass without touching the olive. By placing the wineglass over the olive and rapidly moving it around in circles, the olive will move up to the large diameter of the glass, at which time the glass can be flipped over, capturing the olive, as seen in an mpge video by clicking your mouse on the photograph at the left above.
SUGGESTIONS: See Question of the Week #166 for information on using this demonstration to enhance class involvement.
Have your class try to figure it out. Suggest other possibilities: place the olive next to the glass and use levitation, or place the olive in front of the wineglass lying on its side and use the Bernoulli effect.
REFERENCES: (PIRA unknown)
EQUIPMENT: Wineglass and olive. Bring your own olive or warn us a couple of days early.
