Not using the proper method or material may have serious impact on the performance of the connectors. Although the connectors are cleaned prior to packaging, the dust caps and exposure to airborne particles result in the need to properly clean each connector prior to mating. The following are the recommended procedures and materials required for cleaning fiber optic connectors and bulkhead adapters. Typical Materials Required for Proper Cleaning: Lint-Free Wipes Isopropyl Alcohol or Ethyl Alcohol > 99% (Do not use a lesser grade) Lint-Free Swabs Filtered, Canned Air Bulkhead Adapter Cleaning Procedures: Remove dust caps from end of adapter Gently blow air into the adapter. Using alcohol moistened swab gently insert into the adapter and turn the swab several times. Remove swab and insert a clean dry swab and turn several times. Remove dry swab and gently blow air into the adapter. Connector Cleaning Procedure: Remove dust cap from connector Moisten a new wipe with alcohol and gently wipe around and across the end of the ferrule. Use a dry wipe and wipe around and across the end to the ferrule With the air blow down on an angle not directly at the connector end. (Do not handle the connector end) Insert the connector end into the previously cleaned adapter. Considerations: Do not allow cables to have less than a 2" bend radius. When mating and unmating connectors, handle only by the connector, not by the cable or boot. =====================================================================
