Constraining Planck scale Lorentz violations via photon absorption:
an exemplar case of quantum gravity phenomenology
In this talk I shall discuss the constraints that can be derived
from the observation of photon absorption in the radiation emitted from
distant objects like Mkn 501. This investigation shows some novel properties
of reactions in the presence of Lorentz violation and the determinations of
the constraints arises conceptual problems that are typical of quantum
gravity phenomenology. In this sense photon absorption can serve as an
exemplar case in showing the challenges that this kind of studies poses to
researcher.
