First-order quasilinear canonical representation of the
characteristic
formulation of the Einstein equations
We prescribe a choice of variables that casts the equations of the fully
nonlinear characteristic formulation of general relativity in quasi-linear
canonical form. A formulation of this type provides the possibility of
further
studies at the analytical level. In addition, it allows for the
incorporation
of advanced numerical techniques available for first order systems, which
had
not been applicable so far to the characteristic problem of the Einstein
equations, and provides an appropriate framework for a unified treatment of
the
vacuum and matter problems.
