Climate Change and the Future of Nuclear Energy

To avoid potentially catastrophic changes in the Earth's climate, world energy supply must shift over the next several decades toward carbon-free sources, such as wind, solar, biomass, and nuclear energy. Of these nuclear energy has particular promise for large-scale expansion, if the challenges of operational safety, waste disposal, and nuclear proliferation can be managed. The Bush administration's Global Nuclear Energy Partnership promises to do this, but is more likely to exacerbate these risks.
