F5-23: VENTURI TUBE WITH WATER - GAUGES

PURPOSE: To illustrate the Venturi effect in water.

DESCRIPTION: The apparatus consists of a water reservoir, a pump, and a Venturi tube with pressure gauges. When the pump is activated and air removed from the system, the water circulates around a closed path. The pressure is measured at four points along the tube.

This is a sensitive experiment; the pressure differences here are rather small. It is important to remove all air from the system and to install a semi-flexible reservoir along the tube to absorb the shock from the pump and reduce vibration of the meters.

SUGGESTIONS: This one is hard to see, because of the small gauges and the small pressure differences. Consider F5-24: VENTURI TUBE WITH WATER - MANOMETERS as a newer alternative.
