D3-31: AIR TABLE - TETHERBALL

PURPOSE: To show qualitatively an example of non-conservation of angular momentum.

DESCRIPTION: The speed of the rotating puck increases as the radius of the path decreases. Angular momentum is not conserved because the force is not central.

SUGGESTIONS: The air table is only available in rooms 1410, 1412, and 0405 because it will not fit through a standard door.

REFERENCES: (PIRA unknown.) See Marion and Hornyak, Problem 10-18.

EQUIPMENT: Air table with tetherball attachment.

SETUP TIME: 10 min.
