A stream of water from a large reservoir, shown in the picture below, is deflected by moving a positively charged glass rod close the water stream, as seen in an mpeg video by clicking your mouse on the photograph.

Suppose that we now substitute a negatively charged black rubber rod for the positively charged rod. What will happen?

When the negatively charged rod is held near the water stream:

• (a) the water stream will deflect in the opposite direction.
• (b) the water stream will deflect in the same direction.
• (c) the water stream will not deflect.
