BCA/iLRN is a powerful, integrated web-based homework, tutorial and testing system providing self-help and diagnostic tools to enhance your learning experience. An advantage this program has over WebAssign is it is free! The version we will use is tied to ed. 6 of the text (Physics for Scientists and Engineers with Modern Physics by Serway and Jewett). Among the differences you will find with earlier versions of the text will additional problems. The program is still in the construction phase so it is by no means perfect. For example, the system works best with WINDOWS Internet Explorer 6.0 or Mozilla 1.2 or higher. You will also need Java 1.4.2 and some applications may need Flash. Other system requirements can be found on the iLrn web page.

While I have not had any problems with Netscape, I am told the system will not work properly with Netscape! There are several important aspects of the program you need to know. First, you should know that if you do not complete a problem correctly before you logout, you may see different numerical values when you login in the next time! Second, you need to submit the entire assignment at the end if you want your work to be saved. Submitting individual problems does not save your assignment! In situations where there are a limited number of times you can attempt an assignment, a login counts even if you do not submit the assignment.

If you have used iLrn in the past, have a username and password, should go directly to veteran user. If you were registered for PHYS270 before August 26, 2004, but have never used iLrn, you should do the following to get started:

  1. Go to http://www.ilrn.com/.
  2. Click on "Login" located at the top left-hand side of the screen.
  3. Choose MD
  4. Type in "Univ" in the name of the school field and click "Search."
  5. Click on "UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND (COLLEGE PARK, MD). This will take you to the Univ. of MD Login screen. The system will want to place cookies on your machine, which will allow you to go directly to this login page in the future.
  6. Your login is your official UMCP email address (the one the Registrar has on file for you) and your password is your U ID. (This is not your SSN. To find your U ID click here.) If you are having problems, please see me.
  7. For help, see the Student Guide that came bundled with new copies of the text. If you did not purchase a new copy, or do not want to purchase an individual copy, you can view an on-line version from the iLrn login page.
Those of you who have never used iLrn and your names were added to the roster after August 26, 2004 will need to self-enroll using a PIN I will give you. To self enroll, visit self-enrollment
