Reading Assignments

Physics 131, Fall 2012

Navigation bar

There is a reading assignment to be done before each lecture.

This assignment consists of a few web pages. For two of these pages (indicated by boldface and green type), you will be required to enter some comments in the MasteringPhysics environment specifying

    1. A brief summary of the main points of the page. (Try to keep it short, but focus on the key points you think you will need to know.)
    2. A description of anything on the page you found confusing or unclear.
    3. A question or two that you have that you would like answered that would help you understand the material better.

Note: Read ALL THE ASSIGNED PAGES, not just the ones that your are required to summarize. These extra pages are usually short and provide an overview that helps you make sense of the ones you have to write about.

Your descriptions and questions are due the night before each lecture at 10 PM and will not be accepted after that. Each of the commentaries will receive a point (if something reasonable is written).

Click on the following links to find the readings for each lecture. Links will be posted after the previous lecture. (Links will also be posted on the schedule page when the reading assignments are ready.)

NOTE: Most pages have lots of cross links -- some back to other pages in the assignment (just like in Wikipedia). We recommend that you begin by reading each of the pages through first without following the imbedded links. After you have read the relevant pages (and written your notes about the bold green-marked pages) feel free to go back and explore, getting as lost in cyberspace as you usually do when you surf the web! (But also note that some of the linked pages haven't been written yet!)
