All Individual student Course records have been posted on Blackboard today, Fri 12/21/07. Use your password to review your own record. The record includes your Course letter grade <LG>, your final rank in class <Rnk/60>, your overall Course Score <CsSc>, computed as described under GRADING POLICY: CsSc = 0.55*NTS +0.30*NLS +0.10*NHS +0.05*NPS. The Course Score,CsSc, is the quantity which, when ordered from highest to lowest, determines the letter grades . A Histogram of the CsSc distribution, including the cut-off values of CsSc for the various letter grades, has been be posted here. Click CourseScoresF07 to see it.

Also given is your Normalized Final Exam Score <NFnl/144.6> {where 144.6 here, and similar numerical denominators in other normalized quantitity headings, indicates the hypothetical maximum possible normalized score which one would have achieved who answered all 120 final exam questions correctly}, your Raw Final Exam Score <RawFinal/120> = 1x(No correct), and not 2x, as for our hourly exams..These are the main results of courrent interest. A Histogram of the Final Exam Raw Score Distribution has been posted. Click FinalExHISTOF07 to see it.

Also provided to help you to follow through the process of generating your <Course Score> is your Normalized Test Score <NTS/143.1> {computed from your Adjusted Test Score, <AdjTS/530.85>, which in turn is obtained by dropping your lowest (normalized)one hour-share of test scores from your Total Test Score, the sum all three normalized test scores and
twice the normalized score of your ( two hour) Final Exam.

In addition, your Normalized Lab Score <NLS/74.9> {computed from the normalization of your adjusted Lab Score, <AdjLab/100>, which in turn is obtained by assigning for Raw Lab scores equal to or greater than 80% of 220 =176, the Max possible value, equal to 100, and scaling Raw Lab scores <176 proportionately}, and your <RawLab> Score(out of 220), are included.

Likewise, your Normalized HW score <NHS/81.6>, your adjusted HW score <AdjHW/100> (adjusted to 80% of the Max, 132, like the Lab scores mentioned above), your Raw HW score <RHW/132>, and your Normalized Participation Score, <NPS>, your Raw Participation Score, <FnlClckrTtl/30>,and your Adjusted Participation Score, <AdjPS> are included. The Participation Scores are handled as the Lab and HW scores were handled above, i.e. according to the "80% is Enough" principle.

In addition, all of the records previously published on Exams I, II and III and the Early Warning Letter Grades (EWG) presented early in the semester remain available on Blackboard.

Please call me at 301-405-6118 if you need help understanding your record, and leave your telephone number and a good time for me to call you back if I am not here when you call. And please email <griffin@physics.umd.edu> if you have any difficulty getting your Blackboard results. And have a GOOD WINTER HOLIDAY!

10/02/07B: The following items have been updated and uploaded today to Blackboard/Elms, and should be available to you when you use your password: EWG: NExI; RExI; ExI#Crrct; 10-2ClckrSc/6; ClickerID; ClickerOK?(Date). They are explained as follows:
"EWG" is the early warning grade which will be submitted soon to the Registrar's office. It is required for all freshman and sophomores, but we provide it for all students. In Physics 117 it is based entirely on Exam I. It is the last letter grade we will calculate before the end of the semester.
"NExI" is your normalized Exam I score, related to your ExI Raw score, R, by the following formula,
N = 70 +(R-71.5)*20/20.2, where 71.5 was the average and 20.2 the standard deviation (roughly, the spread) of the ExI Raw scores. The Normalized score is defined to have an average of 70 and a Standard Deviation of 20. It allows difficult exams, with low averages, and easy exams, with high averages, to be compared, and dropped, equitably.
"RExI" is your Raw Exam Score, equal to the number of correct answers you offered in Exam I times 2 points for each.
"ExI#Crrct" is your number of correct answers in Exam I, and must always equal one half of "RExI".
"10-2ClckrSc/6" is your cumulative total Clicker count through today, Tuesday, 10/2/07, out of a maximum possible of 6.
"ClickerID" is the identifier string which Blackboard has for your clicker. A blank here impies that BlackBoard can not possibly register a click from your clicker.
"ClickerOK?(Date)" indicates the date when you clicker first registered an anwer to an in-class clicker query. A blank here indicates that your clicker has never registered a click.

Later today you should find your own Early Warning Grade posted on Blackboard and, in a few days, on the Registrar's official grade site.

9/14/07: Two items have been posted today for each student on BlackBoard. Use your password to see your Blackboard file, which will accumulate relevant course data for you as the semester proceeds.
The first, <ClickerOK?>, lists the earliest date on which your clicker successfully recorded an answer to any query. A blank indicates that no clicker registered to you has yet successfully recorded any answer. Most blanks correspond to students who have not yet registered a clicker
with Blackboard at all.
The second <ClckrSc/1> gives your total clicker score so far. This score will accumulate over the semester and provide the basis for your Particpation Score. Watch it as it grows to pick up any possible errors in your participation credit. If you answered either the clicker test or the speed-velocity question in class on Friday 9/14 your earned 1 point, and that is the maximum posssible score so far. Hence the "/1" in the label. (But in the future when two clicker queries occur in one class, they will be scored independently, 1 point each.) If your score is zero here, that indicates that our file showed no click from your clicker in class today. If you were there and clicked, follow up until we find out what is going wrong in your case. Do not let suspected errors fester....it may be quite hard to re-construct accurate data after some time has passed.

9/12/07C: Thirty eight students' clickers successfully recorded answers to today's double trial.
The in-class clicker therefore system seems to be working. I would like to upload the list of students' clickers which have successfully recorded one or more clicks during our trials, so that each student can use his Blackboard password to check whether his clicker did so or not. Unfortunately, a bug in Blackboard's upload process prevents us from uploading a complete list, so that only few students near the front of the alphabet can see the uploaded data. When we get help to get over this hurdle, we shall publish such a list, and announce its publication here. Also, on Friday we intend to start counting the recorded clicks towards your participation scores.

9/12/07A: The clicker test of Monday seems to have been successful. Today (Wednesday) we shall have one more test run. By Friday we expect to be ready to start recording your clicks to evaluate each student's PARTICIPATION score. Bring your clicker today to make sure that it is working properly before the clicks begin to count.

9/10/07B: The last two lines of the last problem from HW#2Txt (Ch4-Ex6) is missing from our website posting: The end of the problem should read: ".....to the west at 12 m/s and escapes. What was the bunny's average acceleration (magnitude and direction) during this half-second interval?" (The full text can be found in the complete text of Conceptual Questions and Exercises from Chapter 4 of the Fifth Edition, accessible from the HOMEWORK page or directly by clicking CQ&ExCh4 and seeking page 3. We shall post a replacement HW#2 Text soon.)

9/10/07A: HW#2 due date postponed from Wed until Fri. 9/14/07.

9/07/07: Our clicker test today was a disappointment: only a few students' clicks were recorded and I do not yet understand why. On the other hand, a few students' clicks were in fact recorded, so that the system is functioning, at least some times for some. We shall try again, after we have (one hopes) a guess about what might be going wrong. Have a good weekend.

9/4/07: The office locations and office hours, telephone numbers and email addresses of Ms. Dunstan and Mr. Wall have been posted here today. Click PROSPECTUS to see them. Please use the office hours to get whatever help you need as soon as possible: early remedy is better, and easier, than late repair.

8/30/07A: The 117 Lab Manuals are temporarily in short supply at the local bookstores. The Maryland Book Exchange had 11 copies left on Thu. 8/30 at about 2 PM. More have been ordered and will (hopefully) arrive early next week. Meanwhile, the text of the lab manual relevant to starting up and to Experiment I have been posted here. Click Lab Intro and/or LabExpt to see it and to download it and print it for next week's lab if you are unable to get a Lab Manual by then .
