Homework 7

due November 5

1. The text on p. 49 effectively describes the bottom wave of Fig. 2-36 by its spectrum, as the addition of the two Fourier components shown in the top and middle of that Figure.

  1. You describe that bottom wave as a modulated wave.
  2. What is the frequency of the carrier?
  3. What is the frequency of the modulator?
  4. What is the offset level?

2. Text, Chapter 5, problem 2 (just draw the waves, forget about indicating how you proceeded)

3. Text, Chapter 5, problem 3

4. A loudspeaker, emitting a pure sine wave of constant frequency f = 500 Hz, is mounted on a turntable that rotates at 60 rpm = 1 Hz. Describe the modulations in the sound heard by a stationary observer, both due to the changing distance between speaker and observer, and due to the varying velocity of the speaker with respect to the observer. Mention the two effects or laws from Chapter 2 responsible for the modulation. Give the frequency of the modulator, and some of the frequencies present in the modulated wave's spectrum.

5. Draw a block diagram of an analog synthesizer that would output the same wave as that heard by the observer of problem 4.
