Sample program for those interested in Earth Sciences

(e.g. for teaching high school)

The large number of geology courses provide a thorough grounding in Earth Sciences, while the strong background in basic sciences will allow the student to keep up with scientific and technological advances. Upper level concentrations in Meteorology and Astronomy provide useful complements the Geology courses and enable the student to understand better the forces influencing terrestrial science.

Standard lower-level courses: see curriculum page.

Possible Courses for upper-level areas of concentration:
Geology:
GEOL 437: Global Climate Change: Past and Present
GEOL 451: Groundwater Geology
GEOL 452: Watershed and Wetland Hydrology

(Prerequisites: GEOL 100/110; GEOL 322 or 340 would be helpful, and GEOL 102 is also recommended.)

Meteorology:
AOSC 400 and (401 or 434)

(Recommended prior course: AOSC 200/201)

Astronomy:
ASTR 430 The Solar System
ASTR 498G: Galaxies

(Prerequisite(s): ASTR 200 or ASTR 120 &121)

NOTE: The list of courses above includes less than the required number of credits for a physical sciences program. Physical Sciences majors must complete a minimum of 24 credits in their three distributive areas of concentration with a minimum of 6 credits from each area. In order to satisfy these requirements, students interested in developing a program based on this sample would need to choose additional courses from the three areas above.
