2005/2006 Undergraduate Honors and Awards

The Department of Physics bestows several honors to graduating seniors who have distinguished themselves by outstanding performance in academics, research, or education -- Departmental High Honors, Departmental Honors, The Monroe Martin Prize sponsored by the Institute for Physical Sciences and Technology, and the Jerry B. Marion Award. Students who perform well academically and participate in undergraduate research may persue departmental honors in physics. The Physics Department's Honors Program was established to recognize and encourage independent and creative scholarship in physics by providing superior undergraduate physics majors the opportunity for advanced and intensive study. Students who, by their last semester, have achieved a minimum 3.00 overall GPA and a minimum 3.30 major GPA, and have been involved in undergraduate research, may be considered for departmental honors. Students meeting these criteria who submit an acceptable document and successfully defend it, earn high honors; students who do not submit a document, but pass an honors oral exam, earn honors. Students who participate in research may participate in the IPST Monroe Martin Prize for Undergraduate Research in Physics Competition regardless of whether they meet the requirements for departmental honors. The Jerry B. Marion Memorial Award is given to the graduating senior with an outstanding academic record, a great concern for the profession of teaching, and the promise of becomeing a fine teacher. This year's awards go to the following students:
