Area of Research: Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
Description of Reserach Area: Study of the transport, thermal, and optical properties of high-temperature superconductors, strongly correlated materials, and other material siwth novel electronic properties.
Possible Projects: Undergraduates can participate in the preparation of these novel materials by thin-film techniques, their characterization by X-ray methods, and in the measurement of some fundamental properties, such as electrical resistivity and the detection of superconductivity.
Pre-Requisites: Some hands-on experience (such as house construction, auto repair, any electronics, etc.) is helpful but not required. Willingness to learn, to work with others and to work on a reliable schedule.
Compensation: Negotiable
Past Projects Successes: Chris Hill, Matt Barr, and William Fisher have been three recent undergrads who were co-authors on important publications because of their research. This helped them get into good graduate schools (Harvard, Michigan).
