Dear Prospective Students:
|
The Department of
Physics at the University of
Maryland offers graduate study and research leading to Master of
Science (MS)
and Doctoral (PhD) degrees. In the majority of cases,
our students are admitted to the PhD program.
We are one of the nation’s leading recipients of research
grants. We have over 25 research programs and institutes. Our
students conduct research at many of the national
laboratories and research facilities in the immediate area.
According to U.S. News & World Report the department’s
doctoral program is ranked 4th among physics departments
at public universities, and 13th overall nationwide. We are
home to the nation's #1 ranked nonlinear dynamics/ chaos program.
Over 70
instructional faculty are active in a wide variety of forefront
research programs, are accessible to their students and have a strong
commitment to teaching. The combined total of full-time, part-time,
and other faculty (including research associates) is about 150.
The department
comprises about 25 research groups and centers spanning a very broad
range of theoretical and experimental work ranging from Materials to General
Relativity Theory. Students can also work with faculty members of IPST, the Institute of Physical Science and
Technology. who frequently hold joint appointments with other
departments such as Electrical
Engineering and Chemistry.
Many of our
students also work at some of the excellent laboratories in the area
including
