December 2008 MeetingMain Page

As you might expect, there are many restaurants on campus and near campus which cater mainly to students, but also some more refined options. Below we present a number of choices in order of distance, but even the restaurants in Washington listed below are easy to get to on the Metro.

In the Stamp Student Union

The Food Court on the ground floor has several pretty standard fast-food outlets: McDonalds, Taco Bell, Chick-fil-A, Saladworks, Panda Express, etc. Another fast-food option is Subway, located in the "TerpZone" recreation facility on the basement level. The Maryland Food Co-Op, on the basement level in the back of the Union, specializes in vegetarian and organic food and serves up attitude with your eats. For a more relaxed dining experience, Adele's Restaurant offers good food and service in a nice dining room. Note that the week of our meeting is Final Exam Week, and some of the restaurants may operate on reduced hours; for instance, Adele's will be open for lunch but not for dinner.

At the Marriott Inn & Conference Center

At the Inn & Conference Center you can find the Garden Restaurant (open for breakfast, lunch and dinner), the Mt. Clare Café (breakfast and lunch), and the Oracle Lounge (drinks and light dinner fare).

In Downtown College Park

Student commerce in College Park is centered around the intersection of Knox Rd. and Baltimore Ave. There you will find a predictable but useful collection of shops for pizza, sandwiches, Chinese food, etc. -- as well as many bars (mostly sports bars, it seems). Local favorites include Pita Plus, right on the edge of campus, and Noodles & Company one block farther south. Further down Rt. 1 in the same direction (near Baltimore Ave and Guilford Dr.) there is an Applebee's and Plato's Diner. Plato's is a student favorite - beyond diner standards, their menu includes Greek specialties such as Spanakopita and Moussaka. The walk is just over a mile from the Inn and Conference center.

A Short Drive From Campus

Franklin's brews their own beer, has good pizzas, and a full menu. Check out the General Store for a decent collection of mircobrews and an incredible collection of things you don't need. To get there, head out the main gates of campus, turn right on Rt. 1, and drive south for about 3 miles. Franklin's is on the left - they have a large, vertical sign.

Chef's Secret doesn't look like much from the outside. However, the inside setting is very pleasent, and they serve delicious Thai food. Located on Greenbelt Rd (aka University Blvd, aka 193), a short drive from campus.

Sir Walter Raleigh is a popular choice for steaks, seafood, and sandwiches. On Greenbelt Rd, about 3 miles from campus.

In Washington DC, Reachable by Metro

The College Park Metro Station is a bit far from the Union (see map above), but there is a University of Maryland shuttle (bus number 104) that runs between the Union and the Metro station every 20 minutes (or more frequently) all evening until 12:30 a.m. From there, you can reach the following recommended restaurants in Washington:
